User’s Guide to Starting Gate

September 11, 2015·Nancy Dahlberg 09/11/2015

Welcome to Starting Gate, the place for news, views and tools for entrepreneurs in South Florida. Because I have a number of new readers – thank you! – I’d like to tell you about this blog and information resource.

For the Miami Herald, I cover entrepreneurship trends, South Florida startup news and the local organizations that support the ecosystem. I aim to make Starting Gate a one-stop-shop for news and information for all things entrepreneurship. In addition to my stories and posts, as well as entrepreneurship stories by my colleagues, I also sometimes post press releases and event notices.

I launched Starting Gate in 2012, so there is a significant amount of content on the blog about the South Florida entrepreneurial ecosystem. At the bottom of the blog is a pulldown menu for categories. I’d like to tell you about a few of the categories you may want to explore.

  1. The categories Startups and Startup Milestones will bring up news developments about startups in South Florida. If you want to know who is here or who is making news, check that out. The category Startup Spotlights is an archive of weekly spotlights that run in Business Monday. Scroll through that and you will get a nice overview of the diversity of South Florida’s young companies, whether they are tech companies or non-tech companies, or run by first-time entrepreneurs, serial entrepreneurs, mompreneurs or youth entrepreneurs.
  2. The Q&A category will bring up Q&As of entrepreneurs, investors and other community leaders in the South Florida ecosystem. You’ll find all my Q&As since 2012 there.
  3. For news on funding rounds, VC trends and more, look at the Funding category. I recently began an Exits category. There are also categories for conferences, where you will find past coverage of eMerge Americas, Sime MIA and many other local conferences. If you want to find out what is happening this week, see Entrepreneurship Datebook.
  4. The Resources category will bring up a lot of information, but if you want to see what co-working spaces are here, go to Co-Working category. There is also a category for news about Accelerators/Incubators.
  5. Each October since 2012, I have done a special report on the emerging tech ecosystem. You can find those reports under the Tech Hub Series category. It gives you a good idea of how far we’ve come, and how much work there is still to do.

There are many other categories to explore. I hope you find this information as well as the blog helpful. I try to post daily and include event notices and press releases. I welcome guest posts as long as they are helpful and not overly promotional. Please feel free to email me anytime – ndahlberg@miamiherald.com - with suggestions on how to improve Starting Gate. And of course I welcome news anytime!
