UM students win regional U.S. startup competition

March 20, 2012·Nancy Dahlberg

Two University of Miami MBA students won the grand prize of $5,000 at the Startup Madness competition for startup companies, held recently in Durham, N.C.

Cohealo Chief Executive Mark Slaughter and Chief Logistics Officer Brett Reed beat out competitors from schools such as Wake Forest, Boston College and Duke. The competition included 19 teams from 11 universities in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Cohealo (www.cohealo.com), seeks to deliver high quality health care at a lower cost by enabling hospital systems to work as an organization as opposed to stand-alone facilities. Slaughter launched the company with Reed and Michael Slocombe in 2011. The three and their company also took first place at the first annual statewide collegiate business plan competition at the Early Stage Venture Capital Conference last fall. In that competition, they beat out six other finalists from Florida universities.
