Florida International University School of Journalism & Mass Communication (SJMC) presents Media Party Miami, a landmark event about media innovation in journalism and communication, in collaboration with the Knight Foundation, Hacks/Hackers Miami, The International Center for Journalists, and the Latin American and Caribbean Center.

Based on the successful annual Media Party Buenos Aires, produced by Hacks/Hackers, FIU-SJMC will host a two-day event from February 13th-14th featuring insightful panels on media innovation and hands-on learning with leaders in U.S. and Latin American media, including:

    Mariano Blejman – HacksLabs/Media Factory

    Gustavo Faleiros – InfoAmazonia

    Momi Peralta – La Nacion

    Miguel Paz – Poderapedia

    Mercedes Reina – elmeme.me

    Trei Brundrett – Vox Media

    Jeanne Brooks – Hacks/Hackers

Mindy Marqués Gonzalez – Miami Herald

    Howard Saltz – Sun Sentinel

    Mariana Santos – Fusion Interactive

“Over the last decade, a wave of change has transformed the way we produce, deliver and consume media,” says Dr. Raul Reis, Dean of FIU-SJMC, “Media Party Miami highlights the latest solutions, best practices, and digital technologies employed in Latin American, North American, and Hispanic media organizations.”

To compete in a faster and more crowded communications landscape, the media industry must redefine how they adopt and employ technologies and companies of all sizes must learn to master and innovate digitally. Innovation in software, greater access to data, and the creation of open standards are leading to the creation of new media models. “Hacks/Hackers helps to create journalism innovators around the world through hands-on making and collaboration,” said Rebekah Monson, co-founder and co-organizer of Hacks/Hackers Miami. “Media Party Miami will create new opportunities for learning and sharing across diverse journalism communities.”

“Our goal is skill- and bridge-building across our hemisphere,”  says Alex de Carvalho, Knight Innovator in Residence at FIU-SJMC, “We aim to uncover the latest digital strategies for gathering and disseminating information and to learn from the best practices employed in today’s media organizations.”

“Media Party Miami is also about having fun while learning new skills and making professional connections,” says FIU journalism professor Susan Jacobson.

Media Party Miami will be hosted on February 13th at the Kovens Center at FIU Biscayne Bay Campus, featuring a day of talks, workshops and networking with media leaders across the U.S. and Latin America who are innovating for digital audiences.

On Saturday, February 14th, the event will continue at The LAB Miami for a hands-on hack day for learning and skill-sharing with experts in new media technologies and tools.
